Shiki:
The Great Buddha
doesn't blink at all
'midst the hailstones.
Imitation:
The Buddha
The Buddha
at Kamakura
holding snow...
Shiki:
No sky is seen,
no earth is seen, and still
the snowflakes fall.
Imitation:
The earth all gone,
the sky all gone, and still
the snow comes down.
Shiki:
An autumn wind:
and for me, no gods--
not even Buddha...
Imitation:
A winter sky
not made brighter
by tinsel trees...
Shiki:
Moonbeams
light falling plum petals
on top of the lute.
Imitation:
Quiet moonlight
broken by the sound of sleet
on my guitar.
